The new treatment for Peripheral Arterial Disease involves inflating a drug coated balloon in the blocked artery.

A clinical trial has proven to have higher success rates than current treatments and doctors expect to begin public treatment by December 2014.

“When we use a standard balloon androplasty what we find is about 50 per cent of them will narrow down within 12 months,” Prof Ian Spark at Flinders Medical Centre said. “With the new drug coated balloon, we’re finding about 20 per cent will narrow down.”
