KEY partners in the national resource sector are calling for the establishment of a centre to help develop the industry’s workforce.
The idea will be discussed at the Resources Skills and Productivity Summit in Adelaide on Friday 6 June.
The summit is organised by Adelaide-based Resources and Engineering Skills Alliance (RESA).
RESA’s CEO Phil de Courcey will use the summit to call for the establishment of an Australasian Resources Workforce Development Centre — a concept that has already gained wide support from industry.
“With peaks and troughs in the mining industry being experienced across Australia, better workforce planning and development with a focus on productivity measures, has become critical for the sector’s growth,” de Courcey said.
“The impetus for the establishment of a collaborative skills centre comes from industry, as many mining companies and contractors have expressed concerns over productivity losses associated with turn-over and constant retraining,” de Courcey said.
Other concerns slated to be discussed at the summit include: the impact of competitive poaching of staff, how to increase the opportunities for women in the resources sector; and building a competitive edge by indigenous engagement.
