A popular beach suburb of Adelaide, South Australia will host thousands of surf lifesavers from across the globe for the world championships in 2018.

Surf Life Saving SA won the right to host the 2018 World Life Saving Championships, Rescue 2018, and will stage the event in Glenelg, a beachside suburb of Adelaide.
The Life Saving World Championships, held every 2 years, is the largest lifesaving event in the world.
In 2018 the World Youth Championships will be added to the program, making Rescue 2018 potentially the largest Life Saving event ever held. An estimated 6000 athletes from around the world are expected to compete.
The International Lifesaving Federation voted unanimously in favour of Adelaide, which also hosted Rescue 2012, making it the first place to host the event twice.
Surf Life Saving SA CEO Clare Harris presented the city’s bid and said she is confident that Surf Life Saving South Australia will deliver the best ever Life Saving World Championships.
“This will be a major event project for us and this will be an exciting project to manage and be a part of over the next 3-5 years” she said.
Surf Life Saving SA President John Baker said the introduction of a Youth Championships will likely maker Rescue 2018 the biggest Lifesaving World Championships ever held.
“Hosting Rescue 2018 will give us a great opportunity to profile our iconic sport as well as the important role we play as an emergency service,” he said.
