A stable of the world’s best riders and horses will compete this weekend in the Australian International Three Day Event in Adelaide, South Australia.
The Australian leg of the FEI Classics six-event program is the only one that takes place inside a city.
This year German Olympic champion Dirk Schrade headlines the event, which begins with two days of dressage before the cross country and showjumping disciplines finish the weekend.
The cross country event follows a track through the eastern sections of the parklands that surround the CBD of Adelaide.
Course designer Wayne Copping has set the 7,000 metre Cross Country for the FEI Classics™ with over sixty individually-designed, handcrafted obstacles based on the city sights of Adelaide.
Event Director and two time Olympic gold medalist Gill Rolton is pleased with the track, the water and preparation providing good footing.
“The course looks stunning, with Adelaide City council working with us to produce a green irrigated track and an exciting Wayne Copping course.
“With the World Equestrian Games only a couple of months ago, many of Australia’s top combinations have not made it back in time to compete, but this opens it up to a bunch of new horses and riders chasing Australia’s biggest prize money, as well as FEI Classics series points with Rio in their sights.”
Rolton said this year’s event has more to offer than ever before.
“Firstly, we have a very exciting line up of event ambassadors and riders including current World Champion Sandra Auffarth, who won dual Gold at last month’s World Equestrian Games (WEG) in France and has a tally of Olympic and European Championship medals,” Rolton said.
Another highlight this year will be the Friday evening Grant Burge Wines Polo in the Park.
The action can be watched live on FEI TV.
The international lineup includes:
WORLD Champion and Olympic Gold medallist Sandra Auffarth German Team Gold Olympian and WEG winner Dirk Schrade Olympian, WEG team member and the 2013 Aus3DE winner Chris Burton Olympian and 2014 Badminton Horse Trials winner Sam Griffiths Triple Olympic Gold medallist Andrew Hoy OAM Beijing Olympics Silver and 2006 WEG team Bronze winner Sonja Johnson Beijing Olympics Silver and 2005 Melbourne and AI3DE winner Megan Jones Atlanta Olympic Gold medallist and two-time Adelaide event winner Wendy Schaeffer Sydney Olympic Gold medallist and two-time Adelaide event winner Stuart Tinney
