However, it was wines from the award’s home state of South Australia that dominated today’s trophy presentations, winning more than half of the major awards.
Chairman of judges Michael Brajkovich MW said the Royal Adelaide Wine Show had become the most prestigious wine show in Australia.
“It was an incredible tasting this year,” Brajkovich said.
“The Royal Adelaide Wine Show just keeps getting bigger and better, and I truly believe that the Max Schubert Trophy is one of the country’s top wine awards.
“As you’d expect at the Royal Adelaide Wine Show, Shiraz classes were of an exceptionally high standard, but we were also really impressed by the Cabernet Sauvignon classes – in particular the Bordeaux blends with varieties such as Merlot and Cabernet Franc.”
The Max Schubert Trophy for Most Outstanding Red Wine in Show went to Deep Woods Estate for its 2014 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, which retails for about $60.
It was the third year in a row a West Australian winery has taken home the prestigious award following Houghton’s victory with its 2013 Crofters Shiraz in 2015.

Deep Woods Estate was also awarded the 2016 Professor AJ Perkins Trophy for best Cabernet Sauvignon in Show, and the Radoux Australia Trophy for Best Other Red Blend, for its 2014 Hillside Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot.

Among the local trophies winners at the 2016 Royal Adelaide Wine Show were Barossa Valley stalwarts Yalumba (Best Shiraz), Peter Lehmann (Best Riesling) and Grant Burge (Best Sparkling).
Penfolds was awarded the trophy for Best Chardonnay and the George Fairbrother Memorial for Best White Wine in Show 2016 Royal Adelaide Wine Show.
“Many highlights emerged in the course of the judging,” Brajkovich said.
“South Australian wines shone in the Provenance section, with Rosemount again taking home the Most Outstanding Red Wine of Provenance, this time for their 2002, 2006 and 2014 Rosemount GSM.
“The quality of the Chardonnay class was also outstanding, while the Riesling and Semillon classes were of a very high standard, with the Clare Valley label Naked Run Wines awarded the Most Outstanding White Wine of Provenance with its The First Riesling.”
Max Schubert was chief winemaker at Penfolds in South Australia from 1948 to 1975 and created Grange, one of the world’s most celebrated wines.
There are 18 wine regions in South Australia, including the Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, Langhorne Creek, McLaren Vale, Limestone Coast and Riverland.
More than 200 cellar doors are within an hour’s drive of the city centre of Adelaide.
