The tours provide an insight into the rich history of South Australia.

Guides tell the story of the most mystifying individuals in the state’s history as visitors stumble through the gravestones with only hand-held lamps to guide them.

The cemetery is the resting place of over 150 000 souls which come to life once the gates are shut and night engulfs the city.

Adelaide Cemeteries Authority Chief Executive Officer Robert Pitt says the award is a great recognition of the cemetery’s commitment to acknowledging heritage through innovative interpretation.

“The cemetery’s night tours have proven extremely popular since they were launched last year, with the theatrical sound and light experience and period actors providing an eerie yet exhilarating atmosphere that has really captivated audiences,” says Robert.

He says the night tours are an excellent example of the Adelaide Cemeteries Authority’s commitment to cater both the living and the dead.
