K-TIG, developers of an automated, precise and fast keyhole TIG welding method for applications in pipemaking, aerospace, shipbuilding and more, won the Industrial Product of the Year Award.

Smart Fabrication, based in the Port Adelaide area of South Australia, won the Enterprise Connect Business Transformation Award. They specialise in steel fabrication for defence, mining, civil, water and automotive applications.

The Adelaide-based arm of Hoshizaki Lancer also won the Australian Consumer / Trade Product of the Year Award for their Lancer Soft Drink Superchiller.

The South Australian Minister for Manufacturing, Innovation and Trade, Dr Susan Close, encouraged other manufacturers to look at companies like K-TIG as a case study for applying cutting-edge research and technology.

“To win a national award of this nature is a tremendous achievement and just recognition of two proudly South Australian companies at the forefront of their industries,” Dr Close said.

“This sort of technology is a great example of the sort of high-value, high technology product that South Australia’s Manufacturing Works strategy aims to encourage.”

K-TIG CEO Neil Le Quesne said the company has been on the fast track to success due to its technology and the thriving atmosphere for advanced manufacturing in South Australia.

“In two short years, K-TIG has managed to turn the way we think about welding on its head and has developed technologies which have eluded the world’s largest welding equipment manufacturers in the US and Europe,” Le Quesne said.

Professor Göran Roos, chair of the Advanced Manufacturing Council and former Adelaide Thinker in Residence, also congratulated the young company.

“I am delighted for K-TIG. The Endeavour Award is well deserved recognition for an innovative South Australian manufacturer that has used applied research to develop an entirely new welding technology and export it to the world,” Professor Roos said.
