New film development initiative 'D-Lab' attracts ensemble of expert mentors

THE South Australian Film Corporation (SAFC) has launched ‘D-Lab: Pathways to Market’ today, an intensive program to mentor film and television writers, directors and producers through the process of project development through to market release.

For the 60 participants selected for Stage 1 of the program, their first day will consist of sessions presented by a number of Australia’s leading market representatives.

Michael Wrenn, Australian Operations of Arclight Films Rachel Okine, Head of Development for Hopscotch features and acquisitions, and Executive of Entertainment One Jo Bell, Development Manager ABC TV (Fiction) Penny Win, Commissioning Editor of Drama, Foxtel Paul Macionis, Senior Production and Business Affairs Manager, Foxtel Neal Downward, Managing Editor of Comedy, SBS Television Online John Paul-Marin, Executive Producer, SBS Television Online Seph McKenna, Head of Australian Production, Roadshow Films Amanda Duthie, Festival Director and CEO, Adelaide Film Festival Katrina Sedgwick, Head of Arts, ABC Television Joseph Maxwell, Commissioning Editor Documentaries, SBS
Writing and development expert Stephen Cleary will be key mentor of the Lab.
Screen Australia will also have staff attending the launch of D-Lab, including Development Executive Jo Dillon, as well as Tim Phillips and Mike Cowap from the Interactive and Multi-platform team.
Two of Screen Australia’s Enterprise companies, Matchbox Pictures and Cordell Jigsaw Zapruder, will also be presenting, along with SAFC Seed Companies, Closer Productions, Southern Light Alliance and Triptych Pictures.
SAFC CEO Richard Harris believes that the selected participants are up to the challenge and keen to take advantage of the available expertise.
“It is nothing short of a coup for South Australia’s local writers, directors and producers to gain such unprecedented access to market experts, right here in Adelaide,” he said.
The launch day will be followed up by a series of workshops by Stephen Cleary in project development.
Participants who proceed to Stage 2 will receive $1500 of funding to develop market materials, the SAFC offering to match up to $25,000 of funding for eligible projects.
