South Australia equals Canada on medal count

HALF way through the Commonwealth Games South Australian athletes have won 18 of Australia’s 73 medals, putting the state on equal footing with the entire tally of Canada.

South Australian sports people have won 7 gold, 8 silver and 3 bronze medals in team and individual events – with more medals up for grabs when road cycling, netball, lawn bowls and athletics conclude at the end of the week.

The tally of the 35 athletes from a state with 1.6 million people is remarkably similar to the total medal winnings of Canada’s 255-strong team so far (18: 7G, 3S, 8B).

As the Australian HQ for cycling, South Australians have dominated the track cycling so far in both the men’s and women’s events.
