IT services company Datacom will develop an IT hub in the South Australian capital Adelaide which will provide training and employment opportunities for an economy transitioning from traditional manufacturing.

Datacom CEO Jonathan Ladd said the development would contribute to technology development in the region, and was possible due to strong local support.

“South Australia presented an ideal location to expand our local operations due to a willingness from our local partners and the South Australian Government to explore innovative business models,” he said.

“These new models of delivery strengthen the ties between education and industry, and provide further new opportunities for young Australians to get ahead in technology.”

The new Datacom development builds upon the company’s existing investment in the region, which already employs more than 100 staff.

The State Government will contribute more than $5 million from its Economic Investment Fund towards the new development over the next six months.

State run Investment Attraction South Australia worked closely with Datacom on the expansion, supporting the company through their selection of possible sites.

Investment Attraction South Australia was set up in 2015 to understand investor needs in the region and develop individual solutions to attract them to set up in South Australia. The investment attraction agency convinced Seattle-based tech company Buddy Platform to establish its Australian headquarters in Adelaide, citing the advantages of the city as tech city.

South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill said the new development showed the local government’s emphasis on supporting new investment opportunities in the region.

“We have been aggressively pursuing businesses like Datacom to set up in Adelaide and take advantage of our low cost, low taxation environment,” he said.

“Hundreds of skilled IT jobs will be created at the site, with training and work opportunities to be delivered side by side.”

When fully completed, the Tea Tree Gully site will accommodate more than 600 full time staff.

The development will also build on existing vocational training services at the site, providing training-to-job pathways for graduates.
