Penfolds scoops pool in Sydney with Adelaide Hills Chardonnay

Premium red wine producer Penfolds has blindsided its rivals by winning the Best in Show trophy at the Sydney Royal Wine Show with a white wine.

Penfolds 2017 Reserve Bin 17A Chardonnay took out trophies for Best Chardonnay, Best White and Best State Show Wine before beating more than 2300 entries to be named Best Wine of Show.
The Adelaide Hills Chardonnay, which has a recommended retail price of A$125, will be released on October 18 as part of Penfolds global collection.
While Penfolds is best known for iconic South Australian reds largely from the Barossa Valley such as Grange, Bin 389 and Bin 707, the Bin A Chardonnay win is not a total surprise.
The 2015 Reserve Bin 15A Chardonnay won the James Halliday Chardonnay Challenge while the 2016 (right) this year won the Australian Chardonnay and Australian White trophies at the International Wine Challenge in London.
South Australian wines dominated the major awards at last night’s Sydney Royal Wine Show presentation.
Langhorne Creek winery Bleasdale Vineyards won the trophies for Best Shiraz or Cabrenet Sauvignon Blend and Best Red in Show with its 2016 Wellington Road Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon ($29). Bleasdale also won the International Guest Judge Prize for its 2015 Generations Shiraz ($35).
McLaren Vale again demonstrated its versatility with Stephen Pannell Wines winning the Best Other Red Blend Trophy for its 2016 SC Pannell Tempranillo Touriga ($30) and Serafino Wines taking home the Best Other Red Trophy with its 2017 Reserve Grenache.
Fellow McLaren Vale winery Chapel Hill won the Cabernet Sauvignon Trophy with its 2017 The Parson Cabernet Sauvignon ($18) and the Best Other White Varietal Trophy with its 2018 Vermentino ($20).
Adelaide Hills producer Bird in Hand won the Pinot Gris/Pinot Grigio trophy with its 2018 Pinot Gris ($25). Longview Vineyard, also from the Adelaide Hills, won the Best Rose Trophy with its 2018 Nebbiolo Rosato ($26) while the Barossa’s Peter Lehmann Wines won the Best Riesling Trophy with its 2015 Wigan Riesling ($30).
