Chinese student ambassadors announced in Shandong

TWO Chinese university students have won the opportunity to travel to Adelaide as ambassadors for South Australia.

Fu Lu from Shandong University and Xu Haiguang from Shandong Vocational College of Science and Technology will travel to Adelaide, South Australia’s capital, and undertake a four-week English course and study tour.
The winners were announced by South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill who is this week leading a 160-strong delegation of government delegates and representatives of more than 100 local companies to Shandong, South Australia’s sister state.
The search for two ambassadors began last year to increase awareness of Adelaide and its education sector.
It will be the second time Shandong sends student ambassadors to South Australia, following the success of the 2015 campaign.
Student attraction agency StudyAdelaide runs the Amazing Ambassador Recruitment Campaign as a joint initiative with its Adelaide education partners.
Study Adelaide CEO Karyn Kent said the number of opportunities South Australian universities provide helped make Adelaide a highly sought after destination for students.
She said the first ambassador campaign received more than 169 million views on social media and had more than 800 applicants wanting to experience life in South Australia.
“We want to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Shandong and South Australia sister-state relationship,” Kent said.
“This year’s Chinese student ambassador campaign amassed 85 million views on social media and had more than 2000 applications.”
The ambassadors will use their social media channels to share their experiences of their study tour with family and friends and continue to spread news about Adelaide’s reputation as an international study destination.
Kent said Study Adelaide had a Chinese language website and kept its education partners in China up to date with what’s new in Adelaide.
“The universities in Adelaide have people in China, as do the government. It’s an industry effort and I would like to think we are contributing to the growth of students coming here.”
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the South Australia and Shandong sister-state agreement that has seen both parties benefit from a close economic and cultural partnership.
Study Adelaide is an organization set up to attract and support international students who come to South Australia to further their education.
About 32,000 international students studied in Adelaide in 2015 and almost half of which came from China.
Last year Adelaide was voted the fifth most liveable city in the world by The Economist Intelligence Unit, which considered the safety, healthcare, educational services, infrastructure and environment of 140 cities.
South Australia’s capital Adelaide has three-long standing public universities, Flinders University, University of South Australia, and the University of Adelaide, each of which are consistently rated highly in the international higher education rankings.
