Asia Pacific's largest simulation and modelling conference launches in Adelaide

More than 700 simulation industry figures from around the world have gathered in Adelaide, South Australia for Asia Pacific’s largest modelling, simulation and training conference and exhibition.

Both SimTecT and SimHealth are co-located under one roof in the Adelaide Convention Centre from Monday 25 August until Thursday 28 August in the cross-disciplinary event held by Simulation Australia.
A number of South Australian companies are present at the conference, exhibiting their technology to delegates from Afghanistan, Canada, Israel, Italy, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, the United Kingdom and USA.
Managing Director Bill Humphreys of Adelaide-based SOMA Dynamics, who have specialised in 3D 'manikin', motion capture and ergonomics simulations for the automotive industry, said that the conference was a good chance to broaden their contacts.
“The show has been about whether our work will translate to other industries. Surprisingly enough it can, with a bit of creativity,” Humphreys said.
It's a chance for the company to diversify in to industries they hadn't investigated before – though the terminology may be different between sectors, says Humphreys, the technology is applicable to a plethora of situations.
“There are a lot of people we haven't talked to before – physiotherapists who are interested in treating patients using simulations over the NBN, we talked to the Navy who are interested in it for training.”
While the majority of attendees are involved in the Health and Defence sectors, there are also representatives and businesses in the Education, Government, Management, Research, Aerospace and Simulation industries.
Some attendees, such as Adelaide's online education and training business Klevar, are looking to expand their own offerings using simulation technology.
“It's great to see the cutting edge of simulation,” said Klevar's Director, Paul Johnson, “we're thinking how to integrate that in to our package with a learning perspective to it.”
Manufacturing and Innovation Minister Susan Close said that South Australia is home to a number of great companies working in simulation and modelling.
“Simulation is an area of technology with an incredible range of uses and implications for industry and I'm pleased for Adelaide to be hosting the conference,” Dr Close said.
“South Australia's economic transformation will be built upon our ability to adopt new ways of doing things, and using advanced technologies to build globally competitive firms.”
Other South Australian companies present at SimTecT and SimHealth include Holopoint, FTE Solutions, and EM SLICE.
As part of launching SimTecT, Minister Close also announced an updated South Australian Modelling and Simulation Capability Directory, listing all of the state's players in the sector.
