Vinitaly, held in the wine region of Verona in northeast Italy from April 10-13, is celebrating its 50th year and is expected to attract about 150,000 visitors.
Led by South Australian wine marketing company Winestate Publishing, the 11 wines from seven regions across five states will be part of a “Tasting Express 2016” masterclass presented by Winestate Wine Marketing Director Peter Jackson.
The Australian wineries and Winestate will also have a 45sq m site at the show where winemakers and tourism officials will be on hand.
“It is a pleasure to present such wines to a very discerning audience, and in particular to the Association of Italian Sommeliers who expect the best,” Jackson said.
“There is a real need to personalise Australia’s regional diversity to promote more than ‘generic Australian Wines' to the world”.
Seven of the participating wineries are from regions in South Australia, the nations largest wine-producing state.
They include Bird in Hand (Adelaide Hills), Totino Estate (Adelaide Hills), Hastwell & Lightfoot (McLaren Vale), Possingham & Summers (McLaren Vale),
Simon Hackett (McLaren Vale & Coonawarra), Molly’s Cradle (McLaren Vale) and Macaw Creek (Clare Valley).
“The whole reason for this is to hold the small wineries’ hands, introduce them to export markets to take them out of a small pond and into a big pond,” Jackson said.
“These are serious wine buyers and they want to come look at Australian wine with us.”
“We introduce their wine to the buyers and then at the end we give them a report with all the sales leads so they can follow up. It gets their foot in the door, it gets their wine on the world stage and it’s great fun.”
Wines from many other wine producing nations including France, Morocco, South Africa, Turkey, Greece and Georgia will also be exhibited at Vinitaly.
Australia was the world’s seventh largest wine producing nation in 2015. Italy, France and Spain topped the list.

The Barossa Valley produces world-renowned brands such as Penfolds Grange, Jacob’s Creek and Wolf Blass.
More than 200 cellar doors are within an hour’s drive of the city centre of Adelaide.
The state is best known for full-bodied red wines such as shiraz and cabernet sauvignon and top quality white wines including riesling and chardonnay.Jump to next article
